Story of Afonso & Camila | Part 1
Camila’s marriage took place. Afonso was fully engrossed in making all the arrangements. The groom was middle-aged, stout, and unattractive, and along with this, he was proud and ill-tempered. Yet, Afonso served him with such eagerness as if he were a deity, and one smile from him would transport Afonso to paradise. Afonso never got the chance to speak to Camila directly, nor did he try to create one. Whenever he saw her, she was always in tears. And through silent glances, Afonso tried to offer as much comfort and sympathy as he could, conveying his support without a word.
On the third day, Camila, tearful and reluctant, was sent off to her new home. That same day, Afonso went to the temple of São Jorge with a heart brimming with devotion, praying sincerely that Camila would always be happy.
When a sorrow is fresh, there’s hardly any space for wandering, trivial thoughts. Pain, after all, is the cure for the soul’s ailments. Yet, within him, he felt an overwhelming emptiness, as though his life had been stripped of meaning, as if he now had neither purpose nor desire left to fulfill.
